Zambians in New England Celebrate Independence

The Zambian Association of New England Empowering Zambians hosted Zambia’s 46th Independence Celebration at Sons of Italy, in Waltham, Massachusetts.

ZANE’s Independence Committee pulled out all the stops to make this a memorable event for all in attendance. This year’s theme centered on the youth, whose selfless contributions to entertain the crowd with a wide- range of their talent, drew the crowd to their feet. Highlights of the event included a fashion show, several dances, sumptuous authentic Zambian cuisine prepared by Aunty Grace, music by renowned Renegade Soundstation from Jamn 94.5FM Boston with Dj. Kojak & Dj. 4eign, and a special musical interlude from artist Manny.

The ever lively and entertaining Ms. Nzjumoh Nyirenda, was in charge of the microphone proceedings, and did exceptionally well as MC, as she engaged the crowd with anecdotes pertaining to Zambian culture and heritage. Two of ZANE’s partners also graced the occasion; MAC/AFIA who promote HIV/AIDS Awareness, and Color Me In! who pair micro-loans for small business development with local tree planting in Zambia.

ZANE’s Vice President Mr. Kwanga Kaweza, thanked the community for their continued support with all of ZANE’s events. He was very glad to formally say ‘Happy 46th Birthday’ to Zambia [Zambia gained its independence from British colonial rule on October 24th, 1964]. Mr. Kaweza also thanked Ms. Nzjumoh Nyirenda and Mrs. Mbita Mwanza for leading the Independence Committee and volunteering their skills and time to make this event enjoyable for all. He thanked ZANE’s partners who were present, for their attendance and participation, and encouraged the community to support the ‘Walk for a Green Zambia’ that was to be held the following day. Mr. Kaweza summed up the occasion by recognizing ZANE’s Executive-Board, for their heart and dedication to the community.

Happy 46th Independence Zambia!
