Our great nation Zambia triumphed Sunday February 12, 2012 as they lifted the Orange Africa Cup of Nations by beating favorites Ivory Coast, 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shoot out.

The Chipolopolo Boys (Copper Bullets) knew it was their destiny to win the tournament; as winning would honor the fallen heroes of the National Soccer Team who passed away when their plane crashed off the coast of Gabon in 1993.

Zambia’s coach Herve Renard is quoted as saying, “We know what we wanted to honor this evening. It was a sign of destiny, written in the stars. There was a force with us. I think God has helped us and given us strength.”

At Last

Zambia Lifts Africa Cup

The young Zambian team were the underdogs throughout the tournament, as the Ivorian team was fully confident with their roster of European based soccer players.

Joy For Zambia

Drama mounted in the exciting game during the post match penalty kick out, when both teams tied at 6-6. Kolo Toure, who plays for Manchester City missed the seventh penalty for Ivory Coast, giving Zambia the advantage. However, Rainford Kalaba also missed his spot kick. When Arsenal striker Gervinho could not convert his penalty kick, it was time for Zambia to make history, to meet her destiny. Stophila Sunzu (Zambian Defender) scored the decisive penalty kick making Zambia win their first-ever Africa Cup.

Zambia are Africa’s Champions and ZANE congratulates Zambia’s National Soccer Team for bringing pride and honor to our beloved country.

We are proudly Zambian!!! Chipolopolo forever!

Why

Our belief is that Literacy is a human right; an allowance of personal empowerment, a means for social and human development. In reality, educational and job opportunities exclusively depend on literacy.

Problem

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO], has expressed concern at the high levels of illiteracy in Zambia. Recent statistics reveal show that 4.3 million adults [33.5% of total adult Zambian population] cannot read or write, a staggering nearly one in four adults. This literacy crisis is most prevalent in Zambia’s under privileged and rural areas.

Response

To help the cause of Literacy for Zambia, ZANE has responded with ‘Combat Illiteracy’ an Empowerment through Education program! ZANE is on a sole mission of aiding individuals with educational opportunities and tools, helping them fulfill their potential and achieve their destiny.

Through Combat Illiteracy, ZANE launched “The Literature For Zambia Book Project,” with the main purpose of increasing literacy levels in rural and under privileged areas in Zambia. This is being achieved by collecting gently used & new books within the New England area for distribution to Zambia.

As ZANE has adopted Chimwemwe Trust School, and now acts as the School’s Primary Partner; Chimwemwe is now the primary recipient of books donated through ‘The Literature For Zambia Book Project.’ Only books that are relevant to the school are to be distributed.

The promotion of iSchool Programs also have great potential in fighting illiteracy. ZANE, in collaboration with its partners is looking at ways of bolstering the iSchool Program at Chimwemwe Trust School with Schools in the United States.

Combat Illiteracy is also composed of the following below:

Seeking Out Scholarships
- Through partnerships with scholarship organizations
- From academic institutions
- Through helpful online links

Seeking Child Sponsorship
- Through individuals or family well-wishers
- Through Schools and various institutions of learning
- Through corporate organizations [for profit or non for profit]
- By promoting & supporting literacy clubs & projects in schools and youth/adult associations
- Through partnerships with other organizations that are combating illiteracy in Zambia

Sourcing Educational Materials and Resources
-Through partnerships with organizations
-Through schools & interested individuals

ZANE also seeks to do its part in ensuring libraries are well stocked in Zambia as an advocate for literacy.

This program is led by our Sports & Recreation Dept. Through this program, we encourage and spur all kinds of sports & wellness programs and projects in & outside of the ZANE community.
Through:

Sports and Health Partnership

With high prevalent HIV/AIDS rates in the African and African-American communities, ZANE takes seriously the promotion of HIV/AIDS Awareness programs in its community.
In this vain, ZANE has partnered with Multicultural Aids Coalition – African For Improved Access (MAC-AFIA). Through this partnership, ZANE has been able to accomplish some of its goals & objectives that seek to advocate for HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention.

Through our Sports and Health program, ZANE and MAC-AFIA have fostered a good and long-lasting partnership.

Educational Health Events & Testing Clinics

ZANE is a proud sponsor of ZANE-FC, a ZANE Soccer Club. Membership is open to anyone and highly encouraged!

ZANE’s Football Club participated in the African Health Cup Tournament hosted & sponsored by MAC-AFIA. The tournament hosted Six African Nations and the teams took part in 15min HIV prevention education sessions prior to their 1st games.

At the events are free testing clinics and educational resources for all participants.

ZANE also showcases certain soccer events to soccer coaches at local colleges. These serve as platforms to assist Zambian soccer players based in the United States to gain access to athletic scholarships.

Beginning in 2009, ZANE has begun to assist local church youth groups and youth organizations such as the YMCA of Lusaka, Zambia with soccer balls and some sporting equipment!
Please contact ZANE if you would like to donate sporting goods to talented individuals and groups in Zambia. For more see our sports page

Free Annual Health Clinic in Zambia

One of the goals of this program is to initiate and carry out a Free Annual Health Clinic Project (FAHCP) in rural or under developed Zambia, particularly at the Chimwemwe Trust School.

ZANE seeks partnership with credible organizations to make this much needed ‘Free Annual Health Clinic Project’ a reality in desperate communities in Zambia, particularly the Chimwemwe Community in Kabanana Compound.

ZANE believes a healthy community equals a productive community..

Please contact us if you would like to Partner in promoting healthy communities.

With 2011 gone and a new 2012 here, I am compelled to write this as a thank you for all the support I received, continue to receive and look forward to receiving. I pledge to be as supportive as I can to all friends, family and fellow Zambians living in Diaspora.

I am saying thank you to family, friends and most of all to the Zambians in Diaspora Associations around the world.

To the Associations; I know you get less “thank you’s” than you deserve. You however, continue getting very little credit from fellow Zambians in Diaspora – an unfair scenario considering the vast duties you have. Truth be told, your work, though underappreciated remains vital to the Diaspora community.

Uniting a community that chooses to separate its self due to perceived or truly existing social strata is a daunting task.

Though we have so much in common, our differences sometimes seem to take over and this in many cases has made the Diaspora Associations efforts look like they are failing. Diaspora Associations are doing a good job. They are well intended and need all the support and participation from local community members in order to be at peak performance. Keep doing what you are doing as associations and let us, as members of the Diaspora support the bodies that represent us in the eyes of the world.

Keep your goal in mind as we embrace 2012 with love and unity. We appreciate every individual in all associations for their selfless act of sacrificing their much needed time to tend to the plights of fellow Zedians in Diaspora.

“One Zambia, One Nation” and “One Love” to all!

Yours Truthfully,
