We would like to thank everyone who participated and/or supported last weekend’s events: A meet & greet with Former President R. Banda at Boston University and A Zambian Cultural Night event with Communities Without Borders in Newton MA.

Meet & Greet: The former President was obliged and happy to meet with the Zambian community from within New England. This informal meeting, at the African Presidential Center at BU offered a very personable time with our former President and all in attendance. To view pictures of this event please click here.

Zambian Cultural Night: Communities Without Borders and the Zambian Association of New England collaborated in a unique fashion to host this wonderful event. This event showcased the Zambian culture in a variety of ways; from delicious Zambian food to a lot of fun Zambian songs, dances, stories etc. A number of activities manned by fellow Zambians were lined up.

The event also included videos such as ‘Zambia Let’s Explore’ and the ‘Chipolopolo African Champions 2012 – Road to Victory!’.

We would like to report that both events were successful. And again, we thank you all for your support always.

With this in mind, the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Washington DC started collaborating with an interim Committee of Zambians in the diaspora to work out the Objectives, Terms of Reference and other modalities pertaining to the launch of the first ever Zambia-US Diaspora Initiative (ZUDI).

The main objective of this initiative among others is to harness the potential of the Diaspora in attracting Foreign Direct Investment, Tourists and capturing remittances into Zambia.

It is therefore, with great pleasure, that the Zambia-US Diaspora Committee shares with you the first stages of the creation of a historical and timely initiative, The Zambia-US Diaspora Initiative. The goal of the initiative is the facilitation of greater Diaspora involvement in Zambia’s development, from a for-profit and non-profit involvement.

After several months of meetings, a decision was made to launch the initiative on April 21^st 2012 in large part so that it would coincide with the visit of a high-powered delegation from Zambia.

We understand that the short notice might make it difficult for most to travel for the meeting so we have set up the ability for you all to listen in to the discussions through a conference call. The number is 218 548 1681 access code 1964. The lines will open at 6pm EST (3pm PST). There is an 800-caller limit so please call in on time.

The launch event will take place on Saturday 21st April, 2012 at the Embassy of Zambia Chancery 2419 Massachusetts Avenue NW Washington DC 20008 from 6:30PM – 8:30PM.

Former President Banda with ZANE President Mr. Kaweza

President Banda is in Massachusetts for three months and in his Inaugural Lecture as the Eighth President-in-Residence that Monday, April 2^nd, 2012 made a strong case for democracy; by telling the packed audience that the only way democracy can flourish, is for a new generation of leaders to rise and solve the next generation of problems.

President Banda was overjoyed to learn from Mr. Kaweza that there is a significant population of Zambians in New England, who are all about the empowerment of one another and their fellow countrymen back home. On behalf of the ZANE community, Mr. Kaweza wished President Banda well during his stay in Massachusetts.

1. On Monday March 12th, 2012, communication went out concerning two vacant Executive positions of Vice President & Secretary of the ZANE Executive Board.
   As of today, March 30th, 2012, we are here to report that:
   Mr. Dalitso Mwanza will be Vice President (until next elections in March of 2013).
   Mrs. Ellen Kaliba will be Secretary (until next elections in March of 2013).

Here is the complete & updated listing of your Executive Board:

   Like ‘Coordinators’ in the past but with broader responsibilities: The Executive has decided to incorporate Regional Directors as part of the overall leadership. The Regional Directors are responsible in managing the affairs of their esteemed regions or states. They will be key role-players between the Zane community and the leadership.

ZANE is made up of 6 States:

With an approximate New England States total area of 71,991.8 sq. mi (186,458.8 km²); Regional Directors will play a key role in working with the committee leaders and the community in the New England States.

Again, the purpose of the committees is to spur community participation and empowerment. Therefore, as each State has a Regional Director, so shall each State have its own 5 committees namely i) Men’s Group ii) Women’s Group iii) Youth Group iv) Fundraising Group v) Event Coordination
Here are the Massachusetts Committee Leaders:

The Regional Directors of all the other 5 States in New England will hence forth each establish the 5 Committees named above. Please, cooperate with them and assist them realize these vital committees to be a reality in your beautiful and respective Communities.

All this is being implemented to help ZANE better serve you, the community.

Thus, as we forge ahead, let us collectively, acknowledge the importance and merits of how all the parts in ZANE connect & work together towards the common goal of Empowering Zambians.

Zambian Cultural Night Event

Celebrate Zambia and our rich culture by participating in this event!

Venue: First Unitarian Society of Newton (FUSN), 1326 Washington Street, West Newton, MA 02465
Charge: $15 for Adults (18 and older) and $5 for Youth (under 18)
Time: 6PM – 9PM

ZANE is seeking volunteers to lead activities to showcase the Zambian culture and PRIDE:

• Hand-washing before eating Zambian Style
• Lead/teach songs such as National Anthem, Chipolopolo Chant, Tiyende Pamodzi and children’s songs
• Storytelling
• Language interpretation
• Chitenge Dancing
• Baby carrying the Zambian way
• Carry items on the head

~ Catering will be provided by our very own Grace Mwanza ~
